Skilled Regional Sponsored (subclass 487)

This is a provisional visa valid for 3 years, for overseas students and certain visa holders who do not meet the eligibility criteria for a permanent skilled visa. Holders of this visa can apply for a permanent residency once they have lived for two years and worked for one year in a specified regional area of Australia. Any secondary applicants included in the visa application can live, work and/or study in a Specified Regional Area in Australia

Applicant for this visa must be sponsored by an eligible Australian relative (e.g. parent, non-dependent child, brother, sister, aunt or uncle) living in a designated area of Australia

Or

nominated by a participating state or territory. 

Main Applicant Eligibility

The applicant must meet the following requirements:
  • Be an overseas student or former overseas student or hold one of these - a Skilled – Graduate visa (subclass 485) or Skilled – Recognised Graduate visa (subclass 476) or Trade Skills Training visa (subclass 471) or Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) or an Occupational Trainee visa (subclass 442) or a provisional visa but need more time to meet residence or employment criteria.
  • Be under 45 years of age
  • Have good English language skills
  • Have skills and qualifications to nominate a 50 point or 60 point occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL).
  • Applied for a skills assessment from the relevant assessing authority for the applicant's nominated occupation.
  • Sponsored by an eligible relative living in Australia or a State/Territory government.
  • Meet the points test threshold of 100 points.
  • Pass all health and character requirements.

Compliances

Main applicant and secondary applicant obligations

The candidate and any accompanying dependants must live and work or study in a Specified Regional Area of Australia and must comply with all Australian laws as temporary residents.



If sponsored by a relative, the relative sponsor is required to sign a sponsorship undertaking to provide accommodation and/or financial assistance as required to meet their relatives living needs during their first two years in Australia. The sponsor must also be in a position to provide any other support such as child care or to enable their relatives to attend English language classes. The two year period starts from the date the applicant enters Australia as a holder of this visa.
